Day Three

Well today I actually had to deal with weather. The original plan was to head on up to Sedona and then up to the Grand Canyon. Unfortunately the weather going north was less than stellar, and low ceilings don't mix well with high mountains.

So I picked plan B. I called my glider buddy Lee who winters right by the Estrella glider port in Phoenix, to see if he was already down in AZ. As luck would have it they were happy to have me over for the evening.

The weather leaving Marfa was sunny and blue skies, but as I progressed through MN and AZ I was flying under a high overcast with occasional rain. Thankfully the terrain on my route was't all that high and I had an easy time following I10 all the way to Phoenix.

On to CA tomorrow :-)

Day Two

Today I flew from Wichita (KICT) to Marfa (KMRF) to visit with Burt Compton, and company. I left Wichita after spending a nice evening with Tony and Leah Condon around 9am to find a second day of stellar flying conditions. Almost no clouds not too cold, and little headwinds.

Today involved flying over a lot of flat and desolate lands. As you can see KS, OK and NW TX are rather barren.

Had a nice gas stop in Andrews for $478/gal avgas :-)

Even got in a short glider flight with Burt in the K-21 and finished off with a nice dinner at Jett's.

Not a bad day :-)

Day One

I finally managed to get out of work around 3:15ish, and quickly ran out to the airport. I rechecked the weather and filed my IFR flight plan to Wichita (KICT) on my iPad (Foreflight rocks).

The weather turned out to be absolutely perfect. The little headwind eventually turned into a light tailwind and I made great time to Wichita, and Met up with Tony and Leah by 8:15 that night.

Flying into the setting sun was amazing with such a clear night.

Getting excited for my trip

Well I decided that I'm gonna start a Blog to share my trip out west this fall. I am taking our club's Diamond Da-40 from Madison to Oceanside CA with hopefully some fun stops in between.

Follow my progress via my Spot page

Or on FlightAware

With any luck there will be pictures here of my first leg to Wichita.
